Letter from John Connolly

Ann Noland was a mother to me.  She was way younger than my parents, but her own children were my age.  I spent many, many hours, days, and nights in the Noland house, as a child, young man, and adult.  I was there on Christmas Eves, and on lazy days when Jim Noland was sound asleep on the couch in the early afternoon, oblivious to the noise around him. As time went on, I brought my boys by the Nolands to hang out, Halloweens, Christmases.

Ann had a gentle way, an Irish smile with eyes that danced.  She loved to sit at the dining room table and chat, and I looked forward to seeing her.  I found myself dropping by just to do that, not even caring if Kevin or Dennis were home.  She always had sound advice, an excellent assessment of things, and loved to talk about all things Little Flower.  She was a great cook, and I still can taste her pizza things on little rye bread....the best.

She liked her beer and cigarettes, and that certainly worked for me, particularly when I was a young man and didn't feel free to smoke and drink in front of my own parents.

I never heard a curse word out of Jim and Ann, but they weren't prudes......just solid people.  Ann and Jim weren't outwardly lovey-dovey to each other, but they were a shining textbook example of how marriage should work. Out of all the folks I have known in my life, if there were any people that deserved to go to Heaven, it is Jim and Ann Noland.

As we know, Jim passed a while ago.  I still miss him, and his knowledge and wisdom.  Always working on a project of his own, he never turned you down to help you with your own jobs.  I'll never forget how he introduced me to the NHL expansion in 1967 with his hand-painted logos of all the teams in the basement.  The Nolands has the best swimming pool around.

After Jim passed, Ann was left to forge on on her own, which she did with zest.  God then asked her to endure the hardest thing a parent could do, to lose a child, which she accepted.

I didn't see Ann so much in recent years, but I loved her so.  She was a dear friend, and I will miss her.

Eunice Edna Kirksey was born in Petersburg, Virginia on August 25, 1923 to the union of Carrie and Ernest Thweatt. She was the youngest of eight children. On Monday, January 30, 2012 our beloved Eunice was called home. She passed peacefully in the early morning hours at her home.

Eunice grew up in Petersburg where she attended Peabody High School and Virginia State College. During World War II she met the love of her life Charles E. Kirksey, Sr. who was then in the Army stationed outside Petersburg at Camp Lee, VA. They were married and after the war they moved to St. Louis, MO where they raised five children. Charles, Sr. passed in 1986.

For Eunice her greatest aspiration was to be a good wife and mother. This she did well. In 1958, in search of religious fulfillment, Eunice converted to the Catholic Church, and had all of children baptized in the faith as well. She has been a member of Little Flower Catholic Church since 1968.

Her greatest strength has always been her positive outlook in spite of adversity and has allowed her to overcome many obstacles and disappointments in her life, the greatest of which was the stroke she suffered in 1983, which paralyzed her right side. With admiration her children and friends watched as she recovered and continued on with life as though nothing happened. Another of Eunice's wonderful attributes was her quiet dignity coupled with her enduring strength. She always held her head high and was a great example to her children, imparting the wisdom of a mother and enkindling life's lessons.

After all of her children were in school Eunice dedicated she needed something to fill her lonely hours so she took a part time position with Sears on Kingshighway. She worked for Sears until her retirement from the Chesterfield store.

Eunice leaves to celebrate her life: her children, Charles Jr., Cezanne, Noren, Peter and Christopher; her grandchildren, Lauren, Cameron, Charles III, Christian and Caitlyn.

This Online Memorial has been created to commemorate the life of Eunice Kirksey. You are invited to add a Tribute in her memory. Please click "Sign Guestbook" below to add your own memories, reflections, thoughts or condolences.

She was a loving Nana to Jeffrey Young, Kathryn Young Kunkel (Adam Kunkel), Rebecca Young, Kristin Mueller Croce (Michael Croce), Carolyn Mueller and Nancy Mueller and great-grandmother to Abigail and Logan Kunkel. Nancy grew up in St. Louis and attended Kirkwood High School and then William Woods College. In 1949 she married the love of her life, Logan and together they began a family, raised in love and sweet memories. Nancy was an artist who saw all of the beauty in her world. She loved her horses and dogs, the desert and bird watching, a quiet night or a country porch, or a rousing party with all of her friends. The light in the room, Nancy made life a celebration- always there with a cocktail and a round (or six) of Jon Jonson. She loved her children and grandchildren and spent her years tying together a family with priceless memories. We will remember Nancy for her sense of humor and her spark, but mostly for the love she gave everyone around her.
